Meet the Flockers: Deron Bauman
In the thread of a post yesterday it was suggested that readers of clusterflock know little about those who participate in clusterflock. In that light I would like to suggest a series of posts by clusterflock bloggers that describe the interests and accomplishments of each clusterflock participant. In the spirit of encouraging that, I will begin.
My name is Deron Bauman. I was born in Tehran, Iran March 29, 1969 to American parents. My father taught at the University of Tehran for many years and lived in Tehran for over a decade. We stayed in Iran until I was five, with a year in California where my father finished his master’s degree, then moved to Yemen for the following two years.
Once back in the states, we settled in a rural county in North Central Texas (I have just finished a documentary on a handful of its inhabitants) and lived there until the end of my sixth grade year.
I have a brother, Derek, and a sister Derith. We all share the same initials: DDB. My mother spent most of her professional life as a schoolteacher and now works for the school administration half time while spending the other portion of her day running her screen-printing and rug resale business. (My parents moved back to the rural county we lived in about a decade ago.)
I spent my twenties pursuing my interests in writing and climbing. I became a pretty good climber for a while, one of the best in Dallas for a few years (I find the previous statement to be sufficiently amusing).
In my early thirties I finished a compilation of found and personal written material called Mockingbird. Self-published, I was lucky enough to have the book reviewed by Guy Davenport in the April 2002 edition of Harper’s.
Currently I am making the transition to being a filmmaker and the documentary I am wrapping up, The World Come of Age, is my first attempt. I am about a week away from submitting the film to Sundance and am pleased to announce that Will Oldham has offered to take a look at the film with the possibility of providing a soundtrack.
My other interests include architecture, furniture, design, art, photography, dogs, marriage, cooking, and watching sports. I love American football. I love European football.
If I had to encapsulate my interests I would say I enjoy making things.
Questions?
Who’s next?
P.S. I also love cars. I am the founding editor of elimae (elimae.com).

When do clusterflockers get to see the doc.?
I hope soon. I’m in the process of compressing it to fit on dvd (for the third time; it’s a long story) and then will be sending it to the festival. They have pretty strict rules about first screening rights but I hope to show it to family and friends at a group showing in Dallas in the next month or so. After that I’m not sure if I’ll have to wait before I could send dvds to friends further away. I guess I’m being cautious.
[...] right way, then I suggest you read one of the aforementioned articles. But since I promised Deron that I’d let him know about the phone once I got it, better late than never, here are a few [...]
