Driving from Dallas to Atlanta

1] The friendly woman at the Louisiana Welcome Center offered me a map and a visitors’ guide without my even asking. She also knew, off the top of her head, about how many miles I had left to Jackson, MS, and Atlanta.

The Corrupting Effect of Video Games

I’m sure many of you have seen this, but I post it because last night I was one word away from punching my roommate while we were playing Soul Caliber II.

Bury

Everyone says “berry”. I say bury.

Curiosa

One of the few things I remember from my medical education classes (I later switched over to nuclear physics) had something to do with whether or not you were supposed to swab an inmate’s arm with alcohol before administering a lethal injection.

Dennis Must’s Reading of The World Come of Age

Dear Deron,

I wanted to briefly respond to “The World Come of Age” which I quite enjoyed. Actually I watched this film through the lens of a statement you made online when you were still editing elimae:

“For a medium to be relevant there has to be an audience for that medium. Literature requires intelligence and effort and literacy. Intelligence is moving towards the visual. The effort required to take in visual information is passive rather than active and the levels of literacy required for literary fiction seem to be declining. Without a culture to support them, books seem less viable.”

I’d call it a “book review” but it seems some take offense at that, so lets just call it how to read a book in a new york apartment, with some useful tips on catching mice…

Remote Control Pigeons

Scientists in eastern China say they have succeeded in controlling the flight of pigeons with micro electrodes planted in their brains, state media reported on Tuesday.

Scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Centre at Shandong University of Science and Technology said ther electrodes could command them to fly right or left or up or down, Xinhua news agency said.

“The implants stimulate different areas of the pigeon’s brain according to signals sent by the scientists via computer, and force the bird to comply with their commands,” Xinhua said.

“It’s the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world,” Xinhua quoted the centre’s chief scientist, Su Xuecheng, as saying.

Broken/Hurt

I was at home last Wednesday afternoon and I dropped this really valuable vase. And I was really frightened and everything because it was Mom’s favorite vase and there was no way to replace it. I thought it over and remembered that I was playing a record at the same time I dropped it. So I just played the record backwards until the broken vase came together again on the floor and hopped up to my hands.

Regarding “Hello”

Look, all I’m asking here is a healthy dose of skepticism. They’ve got some geeks drooling at the bell. Woof woof. It’s a shame, because many of these geeks are a lot smarter.

Joyce Hatto

Now it has become brutally clear that “passing along” is exactly what she was up to. Earlier this month, a reader of the British music magazine Gramophone told one of its critics, Jed Distler, that something odd happened when he slid Ms. Hatto’s CD of Liszt’s “Transcendental Études” into his computer. His iTunes library, linked to a catalogue of about four million CDs, immediately identified it as a recording by the Hungarian pianist Laszlo Simon. Mr. Distler then listened to both recordings, and found them identical.
