    How do those grab you?

    I’ll name one: Mike Leigh’s 1993 film Naked. (A few hours on I might name another, but that’s the one that pops to mind this very instant.)

    Check this link to the BFI’s online guide for a decent overview and a few clips of telling scenes.

    Shoot. Seems that BFI Screenonline “video and audio content is only available to users in registered UK educational establishments, currently UK schools, colleges, universities and libraries.” Ah, well. Trust me. Naked is a great film, one of the greatest.

    The Straight Story (David Lynch – slow, but good)

    Gattaca – Jude Law before he was popular. One of my favorites

    Sordid Lives – 2/3 of this campy black comedy are awesome.

    Rear Window – See why Hitchcock was so good

    You Can Count On Me.

    Metropolitan

    Barcelona

    (and for the sake of the trilogy) Last Days of Disco

    Oh, and Dogville is good, but it will fuck you up.

    Also, ‘Rear Window’ is the perfect film.

    I think I remember saying something like I have never seen such justice after watching dogville.

    The Devil’s Backbone

    I tried not to list only girl movies, but, well, I have girly taste in movies.

    * Babette’s Feast
    * Blazing Saddles
    * Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (release date unknown, but put it in your queue)
    * Ghost World
    * The Legend of Drunken Master
    * Persuasion
    * Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
    * Twelfth Night
    * Withnail and I

    Note that I did not list the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, nor Sense and Sensibility. Because, please, it goes without saying. Persuasion is excellent, though, and less well known.

    This list may have a little too much variety. Sorry.

    Scenes from a Marriage

    24 Hour Party People

    Pickpocket

    Hoop Dreams

    In the Mood for Love

    A State of Mind

    Life in the Undergrowth

    Sherlock, Jr.

    I also highly recommend Kes and David Holzman’s Diary, but they’re not available on Netflix or in Region 1 (USA) for that matter.

    Les choristes (aka The Chorus)

    Au revoir, les enfants
