Dining Out
Cindy and I wanted Mexican food and margaritas; Mia wanted to go the the geriatric cafeteria. At the cafeteria Mia wanted to know what the funny smell was. “That’s Ben Gay,” I told her. We walked past the baby grand player piano and Cindy noted that it was playing the theme music for the film Schindler’s List. Mia wanted roast beef on her child’s plate, which request we granted in spite of our being vegetarians. As soon as we sat down she expressed a revulsion for roast beef and a desire to get started right away on her chocolate cake. As we ate our vegetable plates Cindy asked Mia if she would like to put a dollar in a card to her uncle for his birthday. “My money?” she asked. Cindy said no, that she would give her a dollar to put in the card. After a very long pause, Mia said okay. I told Cindy that it is odd to think of how charity and the good of it arrives late in the lives of some and early in others. I pointed out that she (Cindy) was surely the real Dalai Lama, since she had, as a child taken on a trip to Mexico, wept openly and handed out all of her money unasked. Dinner was over. We left. On the way out Mia looked up at me and said, “The dollar lama?”
