Wine and the Wine Trade (1921): A Sign

Now this is what I call a Sign that Flocker Andrew Simone was destined for the wine trade.

From Time for Wine, a blog entry from the collections team at the Internet Archive:

Andre L. Simon wrote [Wine and the Wine Trade] in 1921, dedicated to the history and making of wine. Includes 21 vintage photos of wine ephemera like corking machines, bottle testing and various vineyards and varietals.

Andre L. Simon? “Sounds like . . . ”

Have you ever seen them in the same room?

    That’s actually pretty creepy.

The question is what does the “L.” stand for?

Andrew’s better-looking than Andre, who died in 1970 at the age of 93. Now he’s kind of creepy.

The “L.” is for Louis. Andre Louis Simon.

    The Fox and the Grapes.

Simon’s Wine and the Wine Trade, by the way, is a delightful little work, and the link takes you to directly to digital versions and a text transcription. And it is but one title in a series, Pitman’s Common Commodities and Industries, published in the UK by Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd. The series featured publications treating of tea and coffee and all manner of products – and industries; here are a few choice titles:

    Cordage and Cordage Hemp

    Telegraphy, Telephony, and Wireless

    The Electric Lamp Industry

    Cold Storage and Ice Making

    Drugs and Commerce

    The Film Industry

    Player Piano

“Those with a taste for this sort of thing will enjoy this thing.”
