“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Wouldn’t that be “people don’t read [books] anymore”? The largest percentage of the population never really did, right? I think he’s right about this … if you’re into capturing mass-market and being a culture driver, as Apple is, then you sell stuff that appeals to the masses — music/video/etc.
I think he’s really just commeting on the deep limitations of a book reader from a market perspective. Really, what would Amazon be if they only sold books? Another B&N.
I think Jobs’ comment is not really to the point. If Kindle, or something similar, can be produced cheaply enough to appeal to those who would like to have a reference or traveling library almost weight-free and easily transportable, then it can be a successful device–speaking commercially–even if it’s for a niche market. It’s not a replacement for DVD or iPhone or sports bars: it’s a supplement to “regular” books for those who want it (and for some, who knows?, it may replace regular books.)
what’s sort of interesting is Jobs is notorious for disregarding a technology before Apple makes some inroad into the territory. he said publicly that Apple would never make a phone, for instance.
