It’s 3 AM…

Hillary asked a serious question in her latest campaign spot. We thought it deserved an equally serious response.

moon museum

Now I find out there was already an entire Moon Museum, with drawings by six leading contemporary artists of the day: Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, Forrest “Frosty” Myers, Claes Oldenburg, and John Chamberlain. The Moon Museum was supposedly installed on the moon in 1969 as part of the Apollo 12 mission. I say supposedly, because NASA has no official record of it; according to Frosty Myers, the artist who initiated the project, the Moon Museum was secretly installed on a hatch on a leg of the Intrepid landing module with the help of an unnamed engineer at the Grumman Corporation after attempts to move the project forward through NASA’s official channels were unsuccessful.

Playmobile Security Check Point

Playmobile Security Check Point

Thank you Playmobil for allowing me to teach my 5-year old the importance of recognizing what a failing bureaucracy in a ever growing fascist state looks like. Sometimes it’s a hard lesson for kids to learn because not all pigs carry billy clubs and wear body armor. I applaud the people who created this toy for finally being hip to our changing times. Little children need to be aware that not all smiling faces and uniforms are friendly. I noticed that my child is now more interested in current events. Just the other day he asked me why we had to forfeit so much of our liberties and personal freedoms and I had to answer “well, it’s because the terrorists have already won”. Yes, they have won. I also highly recommend the Playmobil “farm fencing” so you can take your escorted airline passenger away and fence him behind bars as if he were in Guantanamo Bay.

Tortoise by James Lewelling

“I shouldn’t forget this, I thought with the sleeping mask pulled down over my eyes. ”That happens a lot, I thought with the sleeping mask pulled down over my eyes. You remember something and because you remember it, you think you have it, but in fact you don’t. You think because you remember something one moment, you’ll be able to remember it again, pretty much anytime you feel like it. But you’re wrong. You can’t. There’s a last time for everything–memories included. What makes matters worse is there is no way to tell. You can’t tell when you are remembering something for the last time. You can’t tell when you are remembering it that this is the last time, and you can’t tell afterward that that was the last time. The death of a memory goes by necessity unrecorded.” Calamari Press (2008) [You can order it at www.calamaripress.com]

a surreptitious form of violence

fuck you, chimp

Chimpanzees are highly sensitive to inequity, and typically refuse to continue in interactions in which they get less than a social partner. However, chimpanzees from stable social groups do not respond negatively in situations in which their partners received better rewards, whereas chimpanzees from less-established groups show rejection rates as high as 60 percent.

Strange New Cities

Using earth orbiting satellites, acclaimed researcher David Flynn has studied the high plateau of Bolivia and found previously undiscovered unnatural patterns stretching outward from Lake Titicaca for hundreds of square miles. The geoglyphic works range from arrow straight parallel lines, enormous over lapping perfect circles and rectangles to ‘labyrinth like’ systems of walls and mounds extending over every feature of the terrain.

Rex, bless his soul, was nice enough to post about an incredible video on new Microsoft technology which will change the way we view the universe: imagine Google Earth for space. There is no software released yet but there is a website.

You are required to watch the video. It’s the rules.

Pocahontas, Arkansas, United States of America

“Home of Bulk Poignancy

This mural, depicting early scenes from Pocahontas and Randolph County, was painted during the Great Depression by H. Louis Freund, resident artist of Hendrix College, Conway, and placed in the old Pocahontas Post Office by the Bureau of Fine Arts of the U.S. Treasury Department. When the Post Office moved to new facilities in the late 20th century, the mural was removed and is currently held by the Arkansas State University museum. 1 cup of heavy cream
2 raw eggs
1/4 cup fresh Parmesan
1/4 cup fresh Pecorino Romano
chopped Parsley and Black Pepper to taste
a healthy pinch of salt

Whip together while pasta is boiling. After boil, drain and mix pasta with sauce. The heat of the pasta will cook the eggs. Even if you are not in doubt put in more ground pepper.

Catch of the Day (January 14, 2008)

Reading Michael’s comment on Deron’s photo of Franklin reminded me of my own snuggly-wuggly killer, Lena. She’s had a rough season, what with being transplanted from southernmost to northernmost Illinois and enduring cabin fever throughout an unusually wintry winter, but she’s still in trim, as she demonstrated one balmy day last month when she tore off down the hill to the wood and brought back this prize.

Daring Furball

Oh hai! I’ve been working an a rather unusual project, a website, actually: Daring Furball (http://daringfurball.org), a translation of John Gruber’s Daring Fireball into LOLspeak. It gets updated once an hour (no feed, yet). Read it and enjoy. Let’s hope Gruber keeps on using “jiminy” as I quite like the LOLspeak translation.

As a regular reader of Daring Fireball, this made me smile.
