I am reminded by Elizabeth's post of a fun fact to know and tell: I actually saw Marlene Dietrich in performance in Dallas, Texas! 1973, or more likely 1974 it was -- in a theater/nightclub/cocktail lounge at the Fairmont Hotel. It must have been her last performance tour; she moved scarcely at all, having recently tumbled off a stage somewhere and broken a leg. But she was wonderful -- displayed a deliciously dry wit.

Have any of y'all seen Maximillian Schell's wonderful documentary Marlene? It's a splendid example of how an artist (director Schell) can deal with limitations -- at the eleventh hour, Dietrich refused to be filmed!

Oh . . . and for the record, I want an outfit like Dietrich's Destry get-up in the worst possible way.

Anyways, meet you down at the end of the bar, boys (and all of y'all). And neat bourbon will be just dandy, Andrew.

Don't sell yourself short, Patrick. You and Chris did the serious leg work. I just mopped up.

I wish I had a clip of the time a librarian who used to work for me translated "Wild Thing" into German and serenaded me with it in her perfect Marlene Dietrich voice. She was drunk, of course. I only hire good people.

Allow me to chime in, too! Congrats, thanks and whoopee! Fun videos: love the cowboy boots in Sheila's selection, the fur coat in Elizabeth's.

I second Sheila's valentine, and add another version.

(This version also goes on to explain in a further song why I didn't jump in and help with the great migration to WordPress.)
