As singer-songwriter Cooper Renner put it: “Even the crops grooved with us.”

    Rotary Connection!

By the way, back in the ’60s, my dad got his private pilot’s license (as did one of my uncles and another guy they knew.) They flew little 2-seater or 4-seater prop planes–Pipers or Cessnas. Anyway, my dad flew us (and I can’t for the life of me remember who “us” included–I think it must have been only four, and Dad and I would have been two of those) over the Texas festival. We could see the crowds down below, folks swimming in Lake Dallas, etc. Cool.

Now to make a short story longer, I can tell you as well that the other guy mentioned above was (and still is) a little bit crazy. Once when my family went down to Galveston for a short little holiday, he decided to join us. He flew down from Dallas (leaving his wife and kid at home, mind you!) to Galveston, but couldn’t just fly into the Galveston airport because you had to radio in there (this is in the ’60s–lots of small airports let you just fly in and land) to land, and the plane (a two-seater, I think, which he and my dad co-owned [which probably means in this case that my dad paid 90% or more of the costs]) didn’t have radio. So this dude landed on the beach at Galveston, then called the airport from a pay phone and said, “I’m coming.” They were not amused. Then he called us to say, “Come get me.”

And lest ye think that all of this implies wealth on the part of the Renner family, good friend Sheila can disabuse you of that notion. This used Piper probably cost no more than a car at that time.

Oh, Cooper, I would not want anyone to imagine that you grew up in any but the most humble circumstances.
