Doyle again
“A new conception of sin is needed. The mere carnal frailties of humanity, the weaknesses of the body, are not to be lightly condoned, but are not the serious part of the human reckoning. It is the fixed condition of the mind, narrowness, bigotry, materialism–in a word, the sins not of the body, but of the spirit–which are the real permanent things and condemn the individual to the lower spheres until he has learnt his lesson. Arthur Conan Doyle: Memories and Adventures (1924)
