Traditional Snow-Shovelers’ Songs?

Anybody out there know work songs suitable for singing while shoveling snow? I shoveled for three hours yesterday, and I have a feeling that the future holds more of the same.

The only one that leaps to mind is the Hi-Ho, Off to Work We Go song from Sleeping Beauty.

    Help me.

    Touch Me in the Morning
The Battle Hymn of the Republic
    Super Freak

I recommend humming the theme from the Smurfs.

Oh, God. Snow White. I don’t know if that’s worse…

(I second The Battle Hymn of the Republic.)

“I Been Workin’ on the Driveway?

Thanks, folks. I was singing “I Can’t Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)” (James Brown), but that got kind of old after the first couple of hours.

    More cowbell.

I’m going out tomorrow and buy me some cowbells to string on my shovel.

    Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
    Contre nous de la tyrannie,
    L’étendard sanglant est levé !
    L’étendard sanglant est levé !
    Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
    Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Egorger nos fils et nos compagnes !

    CHORUS:
    Aux armes, citoyens !
    Formez vos bataillons !
    Marchons ! marchons !
    Qu’un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons !

    would you like the rest?

  11. Sheila Ryan on February 10th, 2008 at 1:37 am

The first two lines and the chorus are all I’ve ever been able to recollect!

But now you’ve got me on the right track. Yes, “La Marseillaise”, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” — and why not the “Internationale”? And “Lift Every Voice and Sing”!

Yes, we’re on the right track now.

And the great hymn of the English working class — “Jerusalem”!

May great mounds of snow descend again and again. I am ready. I embrace the shoveler’s task.

  12. Alek Lindus on February 10th, 2008 at 2:12 am

moi aussi, on the first 2 lines but the tune continues on autopilot and lyricless as does Jerusalem and the Internationale

  13. Sheila Ryan on February 10th, 2008 at 10:12 am

    ” . . . the tune continues on autopilot and lyricless . . . ” That’s perfect.

How about the Zombies’ marvelous version of “Summertime”? Can you imitate Blunstone’s vocal style?

  15. Sheila Ryan on February 10th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Oh, Renner, that is good. One-hundred-eighty degrees from bellowing out anthems! Striving to imitate Colin Blunstone would, I believe, affect my shoveling style in a dramatic way. Next opportunity I have, I’ll give it a try (along with the other suggestions) and report back.

No shoveling today. No snowfall. Sunny and cold. Four-tenths of one degree Fahrenheit at noon. Could be worse. It’s eleven below in Hibbing, Minnesota.
