Dear Clusterflock

Tell me a story in the form of a recipe.

2007 Moment

It occurred to me today, that without a doubt, the Colbert White House roast was the single best moment of 2006, and Kanye West’s comment about George Bush was the singular and defining moment of 2005, the wardrobe malfunction of 2004…. For some reason I’m drawing a blank for 2007…. Anybody? Did 2007 have a moment?

Man Stabbed in Queue for Grand Theft Auto IV

Onlookers thought initially that the stabbing was part of a stunt by the store to whip up excitement about the release of the 18-certificate title.

The victim is thought to have struggled home to fetch his own knife for a revenge attack but collapsed in the street and was taken to hospital.

Paulville, where like minded people come together

The goal of Paulville.org it to establish gated communities containing 100% Ron Paul supporters and or people that live by the ideals of freedom and liberty. The first of many, I am sure, Paulvilles is located in West Texas.

The first Paulville based community purchace of land has happened! This land is in western texas a short distance from Dell City, Texas. The land is a 50 acre chunk of land, it is flat and level and ready to be developed. We have had a couple members that went to check out the area and took many photos of the area.

Fighting the trend

Right or not, is it really worth the effort to write the polemic?

No. A thousand times no. Repeat after me: There’s no such thing as knitting that doesn’t suck rotting intestines out of a dead cow’s ass through a rubber hose. In evidence I offer the Philadelphia’s Men’s Knitting Circle-created for “fellas to have a place to sit, knit and enjoy each other’s company and share the male-focused creative process.”

Modular robot reassembles when kicked apart

From the narrator of the video:

…they then enter a search mode, turning around, looking for other blinking clusters. Once two clusters can see each other, they approach each other to dock.

Rumors about the 3G iPhone

If it is going to be as inexpensive as it sounds (some say $199), I might finally buy one:

In a December report, Shaw Wu of American Technology Research said a 3G iPhone would likely ship around the middle or in the second half of this year, after network coverage and battery life issues are addressed.

More Muxtape

Wired did a fun interview with Justin Oullette about Muxtape:

LP: How many users are there at this point? How many muxtapes?

JO: Ostensibly one muxtape per user; more than the population of Germany, less than the population of Japan.

Walter Murch on Databases and Editing Movies

This interview with Walter Murch is essentially a commercial for FileMaker Pro, but the man did edit Apocalypse Now and his insight into how he uses FileMaker Pro as a database for managing the megawatts of information associated with editing a film is very interesting.

B.C. (Before Computing) index cards were used to capture details of each scene and each shot. Each card was manually numbered, entered into a logbook and the entry was correlated with film stored in large cans. He remembers thinking back in the 70’s, “Someday we’ll be able to have a computer in the editing room, and we won’t have to do this all by hand…it was kind of lusting after something that didn’t exist.”

Wow.

I’m humbled and honored to say next week I’ll be the guest mentor on American Idol.

King Solomon and His Followers — A Valuable Aid to the Memory

A few years ago, a then-girlfriend gifted me this genuine Masonic handbook, printed in 1920, as a Christmas present. (I wish everyone had such a good understanding of my tastes.) The entirety of the manual is written in nigh-impenetrable code and shorthand, save passages like that in the middle of the left-hand page, quoting from Genesis.

From what I’ve read, Freemasons technically are disallowed from using printed guides like these, for the exact reason of dissemination by persons like myself. Seeing as it was published prior to 1923, it’s all public domain under U.S. copyright law anyhow. But even so, leafing through something so painstakingly shrouded in secrecy is still mildly creepy.
