does it count if she doesn’t know?

A friend of mine, a high school teacher, was recently Rickrolled by her students, but she didn’t know it:

Aside from the moments of inappropriateness, I’m quite OK with it. I wonder, however, how they know about the Rick Astley song at the end?

I tried to explain the concept of Rickrolling to a friend of mine, also a teacher and also oblivious (something in the career water?).

When I showed him the video, though, he actually enjoyed it and, worse yet, began singing along.

    “This brings back some memories!”

I say that that still counts.

I was thinking a similar thing a few days ago when I woke to here the australian morning show Sunrise play a video of an IRL rick-roll as the ‘clip of the day’. They never mentioned rick-rolling, which raised the question: Is it rick-rolling if the roller doesn’t know they’re doing it?

I think the roller has to know they’re doing it.

I really just got Rick-rolled yesterday for the first time, though I’d been reading (scroll down) about it for weeks. I still kind of like the sound of it.

I’m the (formerly) unknowing rick-rollee, and I think it definitely counts if the rick-rollee is caught unawares. This could potentially be one of the main ways through which the phenomenon is passed down. However, if the rick-roller is not aware that he/she is rick-rolling, it doesn’t count. My opinion may be discounted since I was also one of those teachers who, upon hearing the sweet tunes of Rick Astley, enjoyed the video and song.

On a related note, I’ve made it my mission to make sure the teachers at my school are all aware of the joys and pains of being rick-roll’d by the end of the academic year.

Haras, Are you saying you’re going to Rickroll your co-workers AND your students?

She’s looking for ideas folks, so help her out.

And, I was also one of those teachers who, upon hearing the sweet tunes of Rick Astley, enjoyed the video and song, I’ve lost all respect for you.

Ekim I lost respect for myself the same day, but it’s oh so wonderful.

I’m going to Rickroll the co-workers AND students, I’m going all out!

Sarah, I just gained oh-so-much respect for you!
