How Green Is Your Renovation?

I read this article on the plane to California last week and thought it had some good information from a group of green-renovation experts. Our renovation is almost complete, but I know there are still some things we could do to save energy and improve our indoor air quality (like taking off our shoes at the door).

I don’t like carpet and this quote solidified my decision to not put it in my home:

For one thing, if you’re concerned about indoor air quality, most carpets off-gas volatile organic compounds [VOCs] inside the home, and they collect dirt. As a former remodeling contractor, who has torn out old carpet, I can tell you: Old carpet weighs much more than new carpet.

Part of the problem is not only the carpet but also the cleaning products used to take care of the products. They often have positively charged ions where as dust has negatives polarity which means that after cleaning you have just made the carpet more desirable for dust. (I know, I have worked for a company that did that )

That said, carpet cleaning is a pain in the ass and hard wood floors just look better.
