    I have made this exact proclamation to countless blank stares. I thought I was alone in my projections.

    Sometimes the smartest people wear beards.

    I have a beard. My fingernails don’t.

    Do you make up little stories for them to act out?

    Does it hurt when you cut them?

    neither. they sneak up on me. then I’m like, oh my god, it’s whoever.

    I used to draw faces on my fingernails when I was little. It made sense to me. Maybe it would’ve made more sense to my Mother if I hadn’t used permanent marker.

    I can’t pretend to speak for any other fingernail famoso, but it is more a case of seeing someone you know — an actual person — in the nail itself. It is not unlike finding the Virgin Mary on a saltine in Florida.

    I’m no scientist, but I think it’s a based partly on the shape of the free edge of the nail in relation to the person’s smile.

    ashur, I agree. that’s the way ‘I see it’ as well.
