A woman watches a short movie.

“A woman watches a short movie about Jack the Ripper at the Museum in Docklands, London,” read the caption accompanying this photo from the Telegraph’s Week in Pictures feature. Quite naturally, I thought of Our India and wondered how she is getting on.

I got back last night. No Docklands. No Greenwich. No cake at the LRB bookshop (though I did spend quite a while browsing there—but the cake shop was too claustrophobic). Did not take very many pictures, anywhere.

    Some things I did do:

    • Wish I were dead, when I found that I was sharing my row on the plane with a child and a baby.

    • Ate a lot of excellent but profoundly expensive food (in London, that is; in Paris it was nearly all home cooking or provisions from the Monoprix).

    • Went to the V&A gift shop. Arrived too close to closing time to explore the V&A itself, but the shop is very nice.

    • Tried to look up an old friend and found that, although the last three addresses I’d had for him were all within a few blocks of where I was staying in London, he wasn’t listed in any current directories. Oh, well. If he wants to find me, I’m about as easy to Google as it gets.

    • Rode bus after bus after bus. Did not take the tube once in London.

    • Walked many miles. Did not take the bus once in Paris.

    • Went on a guided walking tour of Montmartre. Meh, it was okay.

    • Met a Canadian blog-friend and her husband, who were visiting Paris at the same time I was.

    • Sat at an outdoor table of a café in the rain.

    • Did not get yelled at by any French people, and did not have to resort to English for any commercial transactions.

    • Somehow gave a hurried and obviously somewhat gullible flight attendant the impression that I was French.

    • Watched two movies—one depressing, one idiotic—on the plane home.

So. Did you have a lovely vacation?

Sit quietly and enjoy a nice cup of tea and perhaps a bit of cake. Lord knows there’s been a lot of it here at clusterflock these last few days.
