“Birthday Cakes of the Past”

I give up. I cannot select The Representative Image from among 231 photos currently posted to a Flickr pool devoted to found and family photos featuring birthday cakes. This one, titled My Second Birthday 1940, is awfully good, and there are 230 more at Birthday Cakes of the Past.

I actually have a collection of old birthday cake photos–sad and beautiful. If I get a chance today, I’ll post my favorite.

I like the one you chose, Sheila.

Oh, I’m glad you like this photo, Cindy. Many others within the Flickr pool were appealing in certain ways . . . but those ways struck me often as not as inviting trite, smirking looks at ‘retro’ fashions and customs. This image I found touching and lovely, redolent of a time when a home-baked cake served to celebrate the anniversary of a child’s birth.

And I am altogether taken with the photo Daryl posted on your behalf.
