Dear Clusterflock
(As per this) Have you ever made an unfortunate choice for a first-date movie?
I’ll start: In high school, I took a young lady to see Ordinary People. That was the last date, too . . .

The best I have is an awkward situation when I went to see Rob Roy with some friends my freshmen year of high school. His mother drove and watched the film with us. During a sex scene in the film (I hardly remember any specifics) my friend’s mother exclaims rather loudly, “oh come on, that is impossible to do” right next to her son and I.
After realizing what she said in front of her son and his friend she looked at us sheepishly.
The poor bastard was mortified.
I think taking a first date to Diner would be pretty good.
I doubt that I chose it, and it was not our first date—rather, day two of a three-day relationship—but: Radio Days. I think Woody Allen is bad date fare in any case, but particularly when part of the story is about a girl who falls down a well and dies. Not hot.
I took my present girlfriend to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on our first date. Four years later we’re still together and happy and haven’t had our memories wiped, so I guess that’s significant.
First Date. Both 16. Both Virgins.
Unbearable Lightness of Being
(Still one of my favorite books–but not one of my favorite memories).
Never returned his phone calls.
The only first date movie I’ve ever had was “Solaris” and the only things I remember about it are that George Clooney was in it and that it was awful. That gave me an excuse to “nod off” on his shoulder though, so it’s not all bad.
We did see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind together eventually, and as we promised we have not erased each other from our memories even though we’ve broken up.
Firewalk with Me - not first date but first movie date with this particular girl. Walked out of the theater basically mindfucked. She backed her car into a column in the parking garage and we laughed like crazy
eyes wide shut.
un-fucking-comfortable…
Not an unfortunate first-date movie choice but something more along the lines of Andrew’s Rob Roy recollection.
1969. Dallas, Texas. Strict enforcement of the recently instituted MPAA rating system.
Fellini Satyricon. Rated R for Restricted. Children under 16 not admitted without an accompanying parent or adult guardian.
Me: fifteen. My boyfriend: seventeen.
So his mom came along with us. She’d wanted to see it anyway.
Hard to top the classic unfortunate choice for a first-date movie: Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) to the porn theater in Taxi Driver.
Fear starring Mark Wahlberg
“With boyfriends like this, who needs enemies?”
That Obscure Object of Desire
Aaron Winslow, he don’t come around often, but when he do — hoo-ee!
