Our neighbors are much nicer.

When one neighbor had an iPod stolen from their car (they had left the car parked on the street and the iPod in plain sight) they got back at those criminals by, a week later, leaving the car parked in the same spot and filled with wrapped Christmas presents.

In shock, they sent an email out to the neighborhood to inform us that they had been victims of another theft.

Andrew, I can't recall whether I've mentioned this before on clusterflock, but years ago, during one of my 'tours of duty' in southern Illinois, when friends and I would go to St. Louis on weekends, we were driving along pretty late at night -- had overshot our intersection, and were cruising along in a befogged state -- when we came up on Chouteau and I said, "Well, I'm just going to make a turn here, then head back up the other way" -- and one friend protested my plan, hollering, "Ain't turning down no Shoot-you street!"

It works so well for my across-the-way neighbor that at 3:30am when somebody broke into his car it woke him just in time to spray the neighborhood with bullets from his Glock. He was apparently on "high alert" after they took his radio a few days ago.

I am glad I am moving to a nicer area.

I once observed a friend leave his house with a pair of long-handled tree pruners. He raised a car's hood, down the street (back when you didn't have to "pop the hood" from inside the car), leaned in toward the battery cables--and the sound abruptly stopped.
