Extraneous Asparagus

“Extraneous Asparagus.” Yes. That’s the headline of the Melissa Clark column I was skimming in the food ‘n’ wine section of today’s New York Times just as Jon, flipping through the Galena Gazette, noted an announcement of the winners of the annual fourth-grade spelling bee at Galena Primary School.

And we got to thinking, How’s this for a variant on the traditional spelling bee challenge? You’ve got to spell both elements within a two-word phrase, but the phrase will be so constructed that neither word will offer a clue with respect to the other.

The Galena Gazette? That’s so random. My wife grew up there. Love the spelling bee variant BTW (and this blog in general).

Thank you, Myki! (I’ve lived in Galena intermittently since 2004, more or less full-time since last fall.)
