Speaking of Memorial Day…

My grandfather, second from the left on the bottom, who made a career of the U.S. Air Force. In this picture dated between 1968-69, he is a Colonel in 16th SOS at Ubon. It startles me a bit to see a man now passed was once so young.

He was probably born around the same time as my father, who died (all too young) in 1969.

Air Force Special Ops command, eh? I know those guys are close-mouthed (with good reason), but did he ever tell you any tales? (It’s been my experience that male relatives are more likely than females to hear war stories from vets — though that distinction held truer for vets who served in WWII.) Raids on POW camps — anything like that?

Alas, no. My father may know a few tales but I cannot recall any, outside of funny on base antics.

He did once give me the advice to never fly with an amateur pilot. Never. Even if they have a license.
