Dear Clusterflock

Do you tend to prefer readings which reinforce or call into question your sense of self?

Do I have a sense of self? I probably do, but it’s like the weather–more difficult to pin down than I might think when setting out to do that. So anyway, I am always most drawn to art that gives me something I don’t already have (including a new view of something I do already have).

    Question. Absolutely.

    Yes.

It depends on my mood, the weather, the time of day and so on. On balance I like to ‘challenge assumptions of the self’ because the reverse gets dull pretty quickly.

It kind of depends on the season (I mean this in the broadest sense), right now it is affirming. A few months from now, who knows?

I’m too distracted to answer this question honestly – or rather – to portray myself as answering the question honestly.

I do tend to migrate toward expressions of confidence – misplaced or other. My sense of “self” is a bit of a poorly-edited chapter book. I’m more a refraction of the readings that catch my eye than a reflection.

    There. I cleared that up.

Hmm. Self. A notion that I accept at a certain level (as a matter of convenience) but consider a sort of free-floating fiction. (I’m keen on William Blake’s vision of our inhabiting various ‘States’ — not least because it plays off ‘state’ as a printing/publishing term.) Hence my difficulty answering the question.

    I comment therefore I am.
