Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Booed at Stanley Cup Parade

If you’ve been following the travails of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for any length of time, you know by now he’s a giant asshole and absolute embarrassment to the city of Detroit — which is an accomplishment in and of itself given the fact Detroit hasn’t ranked in anyone’s top cities list in, like, forever.  So it’s anybody’s guess as to (a) why he accepted an invitation to speak at last Friday’s Stanley Cup parade in Detroit, and (b) why he actually showed up.  The thug should have sent one of his many bodyguards or stripper-murderers.

Let’s keep in mind that the demographic for the Stanley Cup parade is essentially white suburbanites who like violent contact sports played with swords on players’ feet and that allow players to brandish a composite weapon with which they are encouraged to accost other players.  Not exactly Kwame’s hometome posse.

On Friday when Kwame got up to speak, he was met with an ocean of boos that drowned out whatever bullshit he was trying to say:

The mood at Hart Plaza quickly turned from festive to vitriol Friday afternoon when Kilpatrick was introduced to the thousands who gathered after the Red Wings’ victory parade.

In fact, the mayor’s entire 30-second speech was drowned out by catcalls.

“Because we’re all having a good time, the beer is on me!” the mayor said, though few in the crowd could hear over the jeers.

“The booing for Kwame was louder than the cheering when they showed the Stanley Cup,” said 39-year-old Westland resident Sherri Coffey. “It was embarrassing.”

Bruce Cequine, 55, was among the thousands who voiced their displeasure by booing at the mayor. “He should’ve known this was going to happen,” Cequine said.

Even Mike Ilitch, owner of the Red Wings who increasingly is looking like the old version of Joe Namath, capped his own speech of thusly (paraphrased): “One day this city will be great again.  One day you’ll be able to say you’re proud to be from Detroit.  We will make that happen.”

Doesn’t take much to read between the lines.

Boos drown mayor’s speech
