Imminent Apocalypse
I saw it in a dream, just last night.
Everybody knew about the Trinity River bottoms. That was where they staged all the war games, and so nobody really paid heed until suddenly everything was different, and a signal went out from the east that a true war was underway.
I crouched down real low and made it across the viaduct to where Jon and the rest waited in the big house. They decided that he and I should go out on reconnaissance, and I didn’t feel that I was in a position to protest. It was kind of a drag — because I’d left my contact lenses soaking in a case in Oak Cliff, over on the other side. So I had to wear a pair of glasses that were all wrong.
We didn’t make it too far because we encountered a number of refugees, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to ignore their pleas to escort them to the big house on the eastern side of the divide. We got back just before the bombardment started, but I made sure to hold the door open for the two straggling goats. I was so relieved when the black-and-white goat finally made it inside.
Then I accepted a job in Indianapolis.

Cool. Makes me think of a dream I had in high school (and later used for an English composition) about living under totalitarian rule and hiding out in a presumably abandoned farmhouse which sort of turned into a cave when my cousin and I needed to hide better when “they” came knocking at the door.
Coming of age in Oak Cliff does things to a person.
