I had my second child on a Wednesday afternoon during the Spring in my bedroom. I had painted it this extraordinary color of blue. The window looked out on my garden which was in full flower and centered in the window was this beautiful red rose right at the point of bloom. I alternately held on to my husband and midwife and a lovely mahogany dresser hand made by a man who had been like my grandfather.

I was standing when Sam came with a gush and a splash. I did tear and there was some pain and he looked like Yoda had mated with a bulldog. But, I think it was the most beautiful day I've ever experienced.

I've never really understood the epidural movement. I've attended some of these births and what always amazes me is how boring they are. Text messaging or watching TV during something one of life's rarest moments seems like such a waste.
