Oh this is beautiful, Amy. Thank you. It reminds me of the wonderful Japanese fabric prints that feature things like cranes and kites. There is always a kind of plenty in such images–a fecundity that owes nothing to humans, who nevertheless often seem to think they are responsible for everything of worth.

As a Florida child, I was raised with a firm understanding of the “stingray shuffle”: when you’re wading, it’s best not to go stomping around lest you find the barb of a half-buried denizen of the shallows.

However, I’ve never seen one in person. My mom told me of finding herself surrounded by migrating stingrays one day, about 50 feet out, 8 months pregnant with me. She said it was intimidating, yet awesome, to watch how they swiftly and delicately parted around her ankles as they made their way up the shore.

That is a wonderful image, Mike — rays parting round your mom.

We got a different sort of swarm this evening as we waited for fireworks on the lake. Superficially more troubling, but ultimately as beautiful, I think.

People: go look at Mike D.’s photos of no-see-’ums. Mike: Flabbergasting and beautiful. Here in the Midwest, what with all the rain, the insects have multiplied and proliferated and, yes, the no-see-’ums are maddening. It had not occurred to me to respond in any way other than to contemplate swathing myself in netting.

Mike, those are amazing. I’d like to see them all enlarged and framed in group on the wall.
