I just stumbled across this and want to thank whoever is responsible. It was amazing to see how many good writers Lish published. Name writers, writers who were important at the time but who have faded from public acclamation, writers who produced good work in relative obscurity. It's hard to explain to young writers today how important The Quarterlly was in its day. I recently wrote an essay about my experience with Lish's editing and it brought back memories of a time when so many people were striving to write 'literature'.

No, Sean, I do not. All I have is the galley proof of my piece, filed away somewhere in my unruly study.

Tetman--do you happen to have #32's table of contents? That would be interesting to see: the lost issue.

Hi, Daryl,

As far as I know, there were 31 issues of The Quarterly (I have them all and I've read them all; I was a student of Gordon's). Issue #32 got to galley proofs--I was to have a piece in it--but the magazine folded before it was published.

Best regards,
Tetman Callis

Kudos to all involved. I thought I was alone in my fond remembrance of 'The Quarterly'. I have almost all the issues. Alas, none of my work was accepted for publication, but I do still have a rejection letter!
