Dear Clusterflock,

How many times do you Google yourself each day? (I am personally, disturbingly way too obsessive about this and do it too many times to mention here).

I do from time to time, but I’ve got plenty of internet chaff hiding me from searchers: specifically, a midwestern talk show host and a wine writer for the Baltimore Sun. And there’s an IT guy who posts on a lot of tech boards. It would be fun to be the top search result, but relative anonymity has its perks as well.

Lord knows I have done it, but probably not much more than once a month or so.

You do know, Brandon, you can have google send you new information on your name (or anything for that matter) via email as well, right?

i didn’t know that, but I’ll sign up. I’m not sure it will help me stop, though.

Brandon, you do that too often and you’ll go blind. I’ve personally never done it, but I suspect that others have done it with me in mind.

I do it whenever I start getting too many weird visits to my blog, to make sure none of my well-meaning friends have published my physical address. After I started writing for filmcom, I started seeing weird searches pop up.

Other than that, I’m the only Amanda Meyncke in the world. “In truth, it’s a lonely life…”

Different people have better or worse reasons for doing this it seems. I think many writers, for instance, will find it very useful to do this often, since it’s often the best way to hear about reviews of work or comments on it. And, if you enter literary contests regularly, you will often hear of results in this way long before being otherwise notified. I suppose this is true for artists of all sorts.

    Amy,
Yes, we have done it with you in mind.
