India wins air rifle gold

India has won its first individual gold medal.

Bindra’s victory eclipsed everything else on Indian TV channels which hailed it as a morale booster for a country with few global sporting stars.

People poured on to the streets in several cities, strangers hugged each other and exchanged sweets and congratulatory messages after the victory.

As the shooter fixed his gaze on the final target, the moment condensed the hopes of an entire nation starved of a solo Olympics gold.

Oh shit, it’s the Religious Right’s worst nightmare. Hindu’s with guns!

Well, I’m happy for them and all, but–air rifle? People pouring into the streets? Isn’t it like, 30 feet–which is kind of like bean bag toss at the carnival? I’m sorry–I’m sure it’s quite an achievement. Excellence is defined by those who can’t do that at that time, in some instances.

    Well done India!

Daryl — It’s the Olympic bean bag toss, which is much more special. Besides, he’s better at air-rifling than the rest of the world.

You’re right, Olly. It was late and I was at a low point. All sport in the Olympics requires great discipline and high hopes–so congratulations to the best shot in the world.
