One morning–I was maybe 14–my mother looked over her coffee and said, “Your granny called around 2am last night.”
“Oh?”
“She said, ‘I have the best idea for what Michael can do for a living. He should be the person who writes newspaper headlines!’ I told her, ‘Mom, I think the reporters do that.’ ”
“Oh.”
“Your granny…”
A great story, Mike D. It reminds me of once a long time ago when I had started to get some stories and poems accepted by little magazines. My grandmother–known for her thrifty ways–was visiting, and I told her I had just sold a poem. “How much did you git for it,” she asked. I dropped my chin a bit and said I would receive a copy of the magazine in which the poem appeared. “Well can you sell it?” she asked. That brought some perspective to the whole thing that has stayed with me.
