Waste–a Novel by Eugene Marten–Is One You Need to Read
Many Flockers will know Eugene Marten’s work already, having seen it at elimae and elsewhere–or perhaps having had the great pleasure of reading his remarkable novel In the Blind ( Turtle Point Press, 2003). This short novel, Waste, which was the first of his longer works I read, is now available from ellipsis press. I hope you will follow the link and read all of the praise this book has received. I just received two copies today and will soon be buying more to hand out all around.

Buy this book. The man can write.
Mine’s on the way.
I love Marten’s elimae pieces (Archives 1996-2004, alphabetical by last name under fiction), especially Vista, which, over the years when some element of conversation with them reminds me of it, I’ve shared by link (and, shhhhh, *once-in-a-while, print-outs*) with many friends.
Can’t wait to see Waste. Beyond elimae, I haven’t had opportunity to read more. Daryl and Cindy, thanks for pointing it out.
if American literary culture still existed Eugene Marten would be known as well as Don DeLillo.
Makes me want to cry. He should be known at large. Still, we know of Marten. We (appreciators) occupy a tiny corner of the universe. Could it be enough?
Never.
We have to keep trying, yes? We have to keep putting it out there.
The good news is that Eugene seems to be experiencing some of the recognition he deserves, having had several interviews, readings, etc. He also has another novel that should appear soon. If there is any justice, he will receive the attention and praise that his writing merits.
By the way, he and his beautiful wife, Kelly, came to our house for dinner last month (they were here visiting family). He and Daryl had been corresponding steadily for many years, and they finally got the chance to meet. It was lovely.
Rick, if you haven’t read In The Blind, you must. It will hurt you and astonish you.
Cindy, on your recommendation, my copy of In the Blind is on its way. Your story, here, is delicious. One day, it is my great hope to meet you and Daryl. Y’all keep a light on for me and Danny. As we will for you, in case you happen up this way.
It will happen, Rick. We’ll make it so.
