Cooper, I am so glad that you posted this. I read the obit today in the NYT, sighed a heavy sigh, and thought to post something but just flat-out forgot.
And I am a book nerd, and I do know what it means.
Lehmann-Haupt’s obituary of Robert Giroux in the print edition of the NYT is a good deal longer than the online version and includes detail concerning one of the first books Giroux edited, Edmund WIlson’s To the FInland Station, which he judged practically flawless as submitted.
Well Cooper I’ll fess up and say I had never heard of him…but then that’s what I love about this space, no-one judges they just share so I’m off to read about him, see what I have missed and get myself a little more informed.
OK I’m all informed now about who he was and what his contribution was. Thank you guys nice to be pushed in a different direction at times…..books I’d read and books I haven’t, which is also great
I had no idea who he was (other than seeing the name on book spines) until I read Flannery O’Connor’s “Habit of Being” which details their close relationship and shares letters she sent him. He was an important influence in her life, and therefore in mine.
FSG puts out some great stuff.
