things we bought on ebay, Florence Knoll 57W Sofa

I’ve seen it referred to as a Florence Knoll Parallel Bar Sofa. If that is what this couch is called, it transformed over the years into a sofa with a chrome base. In that case, this is the earliest form of the Parallel Bar Sofa.

I’ve also seen it referred to as the Florence Knoll 57W Sofa. I’m not sure which is correct.

My favorite detail is the support structure along the back.

We paid 480 for the couch. I’ve seen it listed at 5,500. We paid 225 for the coffee table. I’ve seen it listed at 1,700. I love the value of beautiful objects.

Is the couch comfortable? I love the look of Modern furniture but then when you actually sit in some of it….

    good question.

it is a fairly stiff sit. I think I’m learning how to sit in it. which probably is short for, it’s not as comfortable as I wish. Amy and I conducted a fun DWR experiment. each of us put every piece of furniture they carry on our wish lists, then went to the store to see things in person. some stuff ended up on our lists that hadn’t been on it because they felt so good to sit in. other things fell off the list. I think a lot of this is dependent on body size and proportion. the Bertoia diamond chair is very comfortable, the Bertoia side chair is very uncomfortable. the womb chair ended up on my list because it might be the most comfortable thing I’ve ever sat in. you can find deals on originals and knock offs on ebay.

The Eames Lounge is comfy. Surprisingly, the Risom Lounge Chair is too.

This couch has style beyond par. That said, one will not comfortably settle in for four hours of football with the boys on it. It has style, more fitting perhaps, for a smart cocktail party, where one might bend one’s bones to take the weight off one’s feet for a few moments in the midst of a such a party, where standing, witty banter is the force of the evening. This couch is that exactly. It is not a couch for curling up on. (Though one might find a way to do it.)

If one is looking to settle in, one could buy a Lazy-boy sofa with overstuffed pillows on the arms, sewn-in. Maybe with cup/bottle holders built into the arms. Depends on what you want to get up in the morning and look at after the game. I see an addition on the house, perhaps? A comfort room?

Comfort? It depends on one’s proclivities. These images are beautiful! The question begged? Are you making a place to live? Can you live inside it?

(I still say you could have a run-for-the-money with anything delivered in Architectural Digest at the moment. Honestly, where’s their comfort room?)

The perfect complement for that picture would be a Miller High Life tallboy placed just so on one of those coasters. Come to think of it, that would be an interesting photo series: gorgeous interiors blemished by a tiny reminder of daily life. I always have a laugh at Architectural Digest for this reason; as if the only objects we had laying around were fruit bowls, orchids and Persian cats.
