let’s put it to a vote
Should I go visit Iceland in November?
a) I do not have 800 dollars.
b) I don’t know anyone there.
c) I am taking Old Norse, so that’s something.

I mean, I have 800 dollars like everyone else with a credit card, but in today’s delicate economic climate, that seems a bad decision.
yes, you should.
but no. not on a credit card.
Without question you should.
I’ve got an idea. You know how sometimes ‘flockers get inspired and we chip in, say, to buy a fellow a bottle of Stoli or help finance a sock-puppet gig in Edinburgh? Well, maybe Deron could set up a Paypal account and we could bail out Iceland and fund Amanda Mae’s trip!
Eh . . . we could put on a show? A fundraiser?
Oh no. But I might put some of my Flannery O’Connor paintings up for sale soon. I just literally can’t make decisions that actually matter.
Consider yourself lucky, Amanda Mae, I can’t even find choices that matter.
Yes, but not on a credit card.
Iceland went out of business yesterday. You wouldn’t even be able to exchange your currency:

No I know, which makes it cheap cheap cheap!
You could buy the whole country for less than your airfare!
You know Bjork, and I think that’s all that’s required to visit Iceland. The Old Norse bit is just icing.
You might want to learn Hopelandic, you know, in case you run into Sigur Rós.
Eh, credit is a tool. $800 bucks at 15% will cost you ten bucks a month until you come up with the funds to repay the beast. Sure, you don’t need Iceland like you need a roof over your head, but…
Well, a few hundred bucks of my NYC trip ended up on a credit card, but that trip opened up my worldview in a way that will echo through the rest of my life. My only advice is, above all, know thyself. Then make whatever dumb or cautious decisions seem correct at the moment.
‘Manda Mae, vote before you go, OK?
Of course Rick! I’m evening going against my long time no-voting record and registering on Monday.
Sheila has the right idea. I would happily contribute 1/4 of the cost. You must do this, Amanda Mae. This is what Life is all about.
Okay. Okay. I’m offering to pay 1/4 of the $800. Not 1/4 of the Icelandic bailout. Just so we’re clear on that.
Well, visiting Iceland is one of my great goals in life, so please go. For me.
take pictures and post them if you really want to break my heart (maybe next summer, for me.)
I will go. I wasn’t sure what to say because there are few words for the kindnesses that have already been shown to me by all of you, but I’m composing something even now.
I would like to visit Iceland. Go when it doesn’t strain your budget.
