    A wonderful speech. And it brought to mind its antithesis: the 30+ evangelical pastors who last Sunday defied the power of the IRS to challenge tax-exempt status–by stumping for McCain directly from the pulpit. I once heard a speech given by Dixie Lieber, a woman who stumped all around for the KKK. She quoted a verse from the Bible: “There is no shadow of darkness in God.” This was enough, in her view, to justify the vast suffering brought to the people we enslaved. The chuch was a champion of that suffering then, and it is today as well–except for those who have the courage to walk away from hate in the house of their God. Racism poisons all who hold it, and all who believe they can ignore it.
