The Presidency. It needs fixing like a frisky Tom cat that’s spraying the apartment. Signing statements, illegal executive orders, over-secrecy…it will be a test of Obama to see if he can put down the powers that Bush and Cheney gathered to themselves.
The economy. It needs to be directed towards making useful things, instead of finding nefarious ways to make profit from debt. And finding a viable alternative to petro-agriculture before the current firesale of oil futures ends, and oil prices start to leap upwards again.
Also America, your chocolate is seriously sub-par.
People are still alright. I think we’ve given the big megaphone to some of our lesser members, but there are a lot of people out of the spotlight who want to take care of one another, lessen their impact on the planet, and create something beautiful. When you can remove the distorting influence of money and power, it really is a battle of ideas. And there are some good ideas out there.
I wasn’t going to bring God into this. Isn’t beer God’s way of saying I love you? But anyway, the farts need to stop. Does that make me a one-issue voter?
I agree with Deron that everything is broken, and I’m right there with Mike D. in priorities. A subset of these , though, that I really want to see set right, is a new justice department that restores the rule of law as it applies to all. No signing statements not subject to judgment, as Mike notes, no people (like Cheney ) setting himself above the law, and no tolerance for political tests for enforcement priorities. I want to see a respect for serious questions and a commitment to finding truth that doesn’t allow fear and ambition to condition the evidence or the analysis of it. I could go on about many things here, but the question is: what first. And nothing lasting can happen–aside from outright destruction–without respect for the law and a transparent process that generates and enforces it.

Me.
You.
The generic, nonspecific you. Not anyone round these parts.
