Danger Zone

Amanda Mae’s new podcast blew my mind with this fantastic cover of Danger Zone by Homesick Elephant:

That is an interesting cover. It took me a while to remember the original, by using a Mind Google and not clicking on the YouTube link.

[...] Speaking of unusual covers of 80s tunes, I find Andy McKee’s instrumental take on Toto’s “Africa” to be quite fetching. The video for the original pretty much defies description. [...]

Reminds me of Hellsongs’ cover of “Run to the Hills” (Iron Maiden). Their version of “Blackened” by Metallica is actually the best, closely followed by “Symphony of Destruction” (Megadeth). Obviously, if you don’t know the originals, some of the effect is lost.

Although not directly related to the phenomenon, this reminds me too much of the tendency of commercials on TV to use reworkings of classic rock and 80s schlock by sensitive female singer-songwriter types to absolutely horrid result. And they always hit you over the head with the single line or phrase from the lyrics that relate to their advertising pitch. Bleurgh.
