Photochrom Travel Views: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark

Folgefond Glacier, Hardanger Fjord, Norway. Between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Publishing Company, 1905. Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.

The Library of Congress is posting travel views from its Photochrom Print Collection on Flickr, starting in northern Europe with 169 views of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These are ink-based photolithographs (photomechanicals), and their heyday ranged from the 1980s to the 1910s.

Hey Sheila, thanks for posting these. The København pics are great fun, working out what’s what, you know the placenames are written in German so they’re not the actual Danish placenames. And not a whole lot of the city has changed much since then, to be honest. There’s traffic there now, of course, and bikes, and the roads have become more formalised and empty space developed somewhat from that time… but the lion’s share of those buildings are still intact, last I saw anyway!

Glad you like, Lucy. Yeah, come to think, what with the images having been published in Zürich and Detroit . . . well, I guess no proper Danish name will be attached to any of the København sites, nor to any others!

Sheila, this is a beautiful image, in fact there is so much to marvel at on the Library of Congress stream. It always has me reflecting of the most happy of times I had as a volunteer working within the permanent photographic collection of the Royal Photographic Society in Bath. I loved it that much I was pretty much working full time – to handle and view such beautiful images close up was the most wonderful thing.

They had a substantial Fox-Talbot collection and on one occasion I was asked to get them out and catalogue them – I damn nearly pissed myself with excitement.

    Anyway, thank you.
