dear clusterflock

What is your preferred schedule? Meaning, if you had your choice, how would you organize your sleep / wake routine?

I’m a big fan of the first couple of hours after midnight – the world quietens down, and I can get things done without any fear of interruption.

My ideal hours would be sleeping from 4am-midday, working from 2pm-10pm [assuming an 8-hour working day], and then futzing around between 10pm & 4am.

I worked a nightshift for 6 months, which started at midnight and ended at 8am. That was hellish in every respect. But I’ve also worked afternoons & evenings, and that was pretty much perfect for me.

I’d push that a little earlier, I think. About 11am-8pm with futzing between 8-2am.

Probably wouldn’t get out of bed.

I typically sleep six hours no matter when I go to bed. But I usually get my futz time in the early morning. (4:00-6:00)

In actual answer to the question, I’m pretty comfortable with the arrangement I have now. Usually up at 4:00 am, in bed by 10:00 pm.

I’d love to have the luxury of finding out.

My last several years of working I went to bed about 9 and got up about 5 so I could take a short walk, have breakfast and clean up, and still leave for work before traffic got totally hideous. Nowadays I go to bed around midnight or thereabouts and get up between 8 and 9.

    I’m with Cindy.

    (Is that a T-Shirt yet?)

Well, it certainly should be. Sheila will have to add that to the clusterflockstock souvenir booth.

Just to add to what I said before – it’s 25 to midnight here in London, my housemates are asleep, I’ve just finished Skyping with my girlfriend, and I have nothing much to get up for tomorrow.

And being sat here, with half a mug of deliciously cold coffee, and several hours of top-quality futzing ahead of me – it’s one of my favourite feelings in the world.

Thanks Deron – it’s good to notice what makes you happy, and this, right now, makes me very happy indeed.

sleep 10 to 4. Right now, I go to bed between 11 and midnight and wake up at 7. You can get a lot of things done in the early hours of the morning. You are quite awake.

I’d also take a nap midday.

Chris, I think we’re pretty close, although you’re even more a night owl than I am. I prefer going to bed around two, getting up at ten. I like to work on blog stuff in the morning, house / furniture stuff throughout the day, settle in with Amy for tv, movies, and dinner in the evening, then a few hours to myself late at night.

Cindy, that was a big reason I left the library. Working 9 to 5…I felt like hours of the day were being stolen from me. I wanted to be able to have 10am brunch on a Tuesday morning, or cruise around town at 3 in the afternoon. I found this past year of working part time, 6-7 days at a time, was a refreshing change. Ideally, sleep 12am-7am or so, and have work for any six hours in between, preferably varying by week. Also, I’d like a pony.

range, my body’s on your clock! (Ha.) If I could truly get myself to sleep by 10 though, I’d have to rearrange certain parts of society. Starting with gigs. Considering most are hosted in dark, smoky clubs, I can’t imagine why we shouldn’t start dancing to our favorite bands at 4 in the afternoon. I mean, that’s exactly when I’m in the mood to jump around.

I like to sleep in. Work scares me, always. Bed feels safe. Working 8 + hours is depressing to me.

  16. Dave Vogt on February 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

I’d free cycle, for sure. 8 hours asleep, 20 hours awake. Time of day doesn’t concern me so much, so long as I get some alone time every day. It’d put me at six days a week instead of seven, but I like it a lot better.

However, within a seven-day schedule I guess I like to sleep 5a-noon on my days off, I don’t like to go to bed any earlier than 1a or get up earlier than 9a if it can be avoided.

I’ve just had a schedule change at work and I now arrive at the office at 5:00 am. This is fine with me as I’ve always been a bit of a morning person (like Rick I used the early morning for futzing) and now I’m home and done with work by 2:00 or 2:15, while it’s still light outside.

  18. Chris on February 18th, 2009 at 8:17 am

So, we all seem to have varying preferences for a sleep/wake cycle…

Does this mean that some of us were born in the wrong time zone?

If I moved to Mumbai, [five hours ahead of where I am now], would I be happy going to bed at 11 and waking in the morning?

And where does this leave me with my possible move to Colorado – is my body clock going to just throw it’s arms up in the air and cry Mercy!?

  19. Lucy Foley on February 18th, 2009 at 10:56 am

About time zone, I seem to be constantly moving between different ones, and my sleep cycle tends to stay on New York time, regardless.

There’s an apt & interesting post here about “the alone time zone” – http://www.37signals.com/svn/archives2/getting_real_the_alone_time_zone.php
