Dear Clusterflock
Is there an intro to a song that damn near stops your heart?
If you have a link to the song, so much the better.

Led Zeppelin Kashmir
Brill, Deron – oddly I knew the tune and yet, embarrassingly had no idea it was Led Zep!
There are many but one that sprung to mind was:
The Smashing Pumpkins Tonight, Tonight

Sorry can’t do fancy links!
The Pixies – Caribou
Mulatu Astatqé – Kasalèfkut Hulu (forget the clip)
Pixies – Debaser
Forgot one of my favourites – Gorecki by Lamb.
Debaser was my other choice, Chris.

Oopsie – that’s The WiLDHEARTS my friend.
This stops my heart. every. single. time. It starts off sweet then gets all excited.

I’m quite fond of Kashmir too, though. I like to think of Saint-Saëns as the Zep of his time. I guess I just like music that beats the fuck out a leitmotif.
Bowie’s Modern Love is one, though come to think, it’s not the intro per se so much as it is my sense of where the song is going and the intro’s function as a trigger.
From my youth, I do have something of a soft spot for the intro to:
Steely Dan – Reelin’ In The Years http://is.gd/mN4U
and then, Sheila got me thinking about:
David Bowie – Lady Grinning Soul http://is.gd/mN6x
I have two (for now):

Don’t know, looks like you might have to copy and paste the links, sorry.
OK, mebbe not.
Well, sorry Rick. Us Brits have become 2nd class citizens as we are unable to watch your links in the UK – I think there is some royalty shit going on with youtube right now in the UK and youtube are taking down a lot of tunes – bless their hearts!
Oh, by the way Rick, what were the tunes?
“Fragile” Sting. “Running Up That Hill” Kate Bush.
Nice ones, Rick!
Thanks Phil, perhaps I’ll tell stories why one day. Do you know “alabama3″ (A3) I’d have to include the intro the theme song from “The Sopranos,” as one to count, too. (Their whole album, “Exile on Coldharbour Lane” I’d count as a “must buy” to any who might be interested.)
Rick, I do know them. I have La Peste but nothing else. I shall check out your recommendation.
“La Peste” is like “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac. (My opinion only my friend) Rumours got more notice in the press, but it wasn’t as good as the album that came before it. (Remember “Rhiannon?”)
Shall we have “one more cocktail” before we call it a night?
Mebbe I should just call it a night now. More later. OK?
Rick, there is always time for one more cocktail! I can always squeeze a Martini or a Manhattan in – As for A3 – I’m sure I have another album somewhere but for some reason I don’t have it loaded into itunes! I do remember Rhiannon but not with any clarity.
Van Halen – Jump.
Something about that saw synth line just gets my pulse pounding when someone puts it on the juke.
The Stills – Gender Bombs. I love, love this song, and I love this band.

Inspired by Sheila, I’ll both recommend a Bowie and suggest that it’s not so much the intro per se but where I know the song is going from there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHywdqH3F6Y
“Scary Monsters”
I’d also like to recommend Love’s “A House Is Not a Motel” which seems to be available on youtube only in late live versions which can only approximate the studio perfection of the Forever Changes version.
Paul Simon – Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover
I dunno, the drums just… mmf.
The Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane

A couple of older selections..
Hendrix Purple Haze
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hSW67ySCio
Deep Purple Smoke on the Water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1sAkZF7SCQ
Little Feat’s “Apolitical Blues”
Televisions’ “Marquee Moon”
Sonic Youth’s “Teenage Riot”
In each of these three songs, I hear the intro and immediately anticipate the joy the rest of the tune brings to me, whether it’s the stoner humor of Lowell George, the dual guitars of Verlaine and Lloyd or the hipster caterwaul that Sonic Youth was when I saw them perform (the Goo tour?) back when I was in college.
The intro to “The Intro and the Outro” (Bonzo Dog Band).
