I’ve decided…

I’ll begin working on my Ph.D in English starting next fall. After this school year I won’t be teaching 7th graders anymore so I can focus on the work. I got a teaching assistantship and will be making way less money. This is scary but somehow feels right.

    Hey, dude, best of all wishes. Congratulations on being admitted to the program and to getting the assistantship. You may know that Louis Simpson (the poet) also got a PhD in English, rather than going for the Creative Writing degree, so that he would never feel the pressure to publish creatively as a part of his job.

    That scary-but-right feeling is one I recognize, Brandon. People may hoot and jeer (and believe it, they’ve hooted and jeered at me), but once you know it and you act on it, things just get better (even when times are tough).

    Great news, Brandon. It will take lots of energy, as you know, but you will also gain lots of energy by not having to confront the smell of adrenalin in those classrooms every day. And soon you will be ready to encounter those larger seventh graders in your university classes. (Leave it to me to start with the bleak shit in the middle of a congratulatory note.) You go show’em how it’s done, Brandon–I know you will.
