It is odd. Something in my experience as an archivist inclines me to resist the deliberately antiquarian aesthetic impulse these images manifest, yet I am pulled by it nonetheless. And a number of these photographs are quite fine.
I actually like the ‘antiquing’ effect on these, though obviously it’s an effect that can be used badly. Perhaps it simply helps suggest the historic depth of India.
