Cam Archer

103

In 2005, I first heard about Cam Archer, boy wonder and film-maker, as I was about to head to my very first Sundance festival.  Found his website, began to admire his aesthetic.  Noticed that he seemed to be a kind of hub, vaguely connected to Bill Callahan, also friends with Ben Chasny, of Six Organs of Admittance.  At the festival, I found out that Archer’s film, Wild Tigers I Have Known, was playing the night we arrived, and set out to see it.  I was number 56 in the waitlist, they let in 55. I offered the ticketer money, to no avail. It was my first Sundance, I didn’t know what to do, I know now.  Fast Forward to 2007, and I finally see the limited release of Wild Tigers.  It was everything I had hoped it would be, wildly strange and atmospheric, a gender study and therapeutic mind-trap all in one.  Archer’s photographs still endlessly delight, colour and competence.

The films are interesting and beautiful. I’m not sure now how he distributes now. Last I heard he was making a movie about hair pullers, with sissy spacek.
