I’ve been meaning to tell you, Coop. Ever since you got me listening to 24 Postcards in Full Color, I’ve been unable to stop listening to Berlin By Overnight. For the full minute and twenty-seven seconds, it feels like it’s painting me. My mother gave me the busy bee quality, my father the melancholy.

Thanks for it, but now I’m curious— is there a song that describes you?

I’m so glad you like 24 Postcards. I’d feel bad if you bought it and then thought it stank! Black Sea is quite different. Not really melodic and ‘musical’ like Richter is.

Is there a song that describes me? You better ask Sheila that. I’d probably go for something totally off-kilter like “The River Bends” or “Wooden Tree” by Ivor Cutler or maybe Lee Michaels’s version of “Can I Get It Witness?” (not because I’m broken-hearted, but because I like the utterly absurd drama he puts into a ‘poor pitiful me’ set of lyrics with a great tune.) Mostly I don’t respond to the words of songs–just to the tune and the sound of the voice. Maybe Terry Riley’s “Rainbow in Curved Air” is my biography.
