Meet the Flockers: Phil Bebbington
I take photographs. Mostly, that’s what I do. If I’m not taking them, I’m processing them or looking at them. I also post them on a photo blog and gallery. I used to read but seem to have lost the ability in recent years. I do, however, still buy books.
I just realised I forgot to age myself! Born on the 20th January 1958.
I live in the beautiful Georgian city of Bath in England. I was a police officer for 17 years until it made me ill. Now I grab work where I can.
I spend a lot of time on the Greek island of Crete. Things make sense in Crete.
So, I mostly take photos. I’m not aware that I’m trying to say anything in my photos. I just wander and take photos of what pleases me and hope that they please others as well. They mostly contain human activity or humans, not a conscious decision but it seems mostly that’s what happens.
I’m touched that I have been asked to join this wonderful place. I guess I have been either commenting or posting for about a year, so nothing need change. I’m happy to be here.

Say, you’re not that actor, are you? No, no. Sorry. I mistook you for Christopher Walken.
So — you’re English, are you? Well, that excuses a lot.
Glad to finally have you aboard.
Oh, Phil, it’s wonderful to have you here.
Phil, I’ve felt like you’ve been here for a while, but I’m glad it is “O-ficial”.
Hey Phil–I feel like you have been here all along, but I’m sure glad you are now here in this way. Especially if it means you will post more of your fine photographs. I have not seen one yet that wasn’t amazing.
I know a man who was the commander of the big US military base on Crete–Stephen Sale. He has moved on to work in Italy now, but he sent a huge drum of olive oil to his parents here (also friends; Rick & Teel) and it was wonderful. They siphoned off a big wine bottle of it for us. I dream of sitting in the sun amid ruins in Crete, eating coarse bread dipped in that oil.
I’m just gonna throw this out there: next clusterflockstock in Crete?
Sheila, Andrew, Cindy, Daryl and Amy – thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. I do feel like I have been here all along, but this feels rather nice.
I won’t pretend though that I wasn’t crapping myself at the thought of writing something, thank goodness for porcelain!
Cretan Clusterflockstock – now there’s a notion. Anything and everything is possible.
Welcome, Phil. “Now we shall never be parted.” (Said in the gardner’s voice, from Maurice.)
The most beautiful water I have ever seen was at the foot of Crete’s Samaria. A blue that defies description. A drag-you-onto-the-boat-and-make-you-leave blue. You are a fortunate son, in a manner of speaking.
Indeed, Rick.
Daryl, there is a huge base on Crete – it was vacated many years ago, but, everything is still there, well the shells of the buildings, the road system, even the fire hydrants. There is a huge communications array there also which I have photographed many times. I love the place.
Phil’s here! Phil’s here!
Cece, it is indeed a wonderful place. It is a place where everything seems to make sense. Naturally it has its faults, but, it is good for the head.
I’m sorry that I’m late, Amanda Mae, some bastard told me to turn left.
Phil, your photos of the abandoned American base on Crete are flaming brilliant.
Here’s one, y’all.
Thank you, Sheila. It will break my heart when they eventually pull those masts down. In fact, I’m sure that it is only a matter of time before the whole place disappears.
I bike to work and by the time I’m online again, we grew a new flocker!
Phil— I, like Andrew and Amy, feel you’ve always been here. It wasn’t until yesterday, when you posted your gorgeous photo under CWalken, that I realized you lacked a login. I look forward to seeing more of what your eyes see.
Oh! And 17 years as a cop? You must have some of the best stories…
It just thrills me to own prints of those masts you speak of, Phil.
Thanks, Kelsey – it feels good to be here as me. I have a terrible memory, but, I’m sure a few police stories will float to the surface.
Hurrah, Phil! Ace. We is flock now.
Thank you, Lucy – I feel like one of many – part of the collective – we are the Borg
Say, Phil, ain’t you Mr October on a Filmwasters calendar?
Yes, Sheila, it is – not sure if I can find the link! I will try, promoting ones ass is good, right?
Yes indeed, I can be found as Mr September, here.
That’s part of what clusterflock is all about: promoting our own asses. In the nicest possible way.
Yippie! Welcome.
I stand corrected. Mr September.
Thanks, Michael – it is good to be here.
Sheila, I am an autumnal type of guy, you know, mellow fruitfulness and all that.
As a longtime admirer and also amateur photographer, I think that terrorkitten absolutely rules this blog. Glad to finally hear from the man himself…
