Victorian Pornography
Some people are just never satisfied. They ask for something about Victorian pornography, and you give it to them — see Part 1 of this series — and then ten minutes later they demand to know where Part 2 is.
Oh, very well . . .
“Thar she blows!”
Inspired by President Cleveland’s
lovely bride, young men from sea to shining sea are asking their barbers to give them “the Esther.”

“Derek White” as “Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton”
Okay, somebody get started now on the film treatment. We cast Derek as Richard Burton (as in Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, he who explored and adventured and translated the Kama Sutra and the Arabian Nights and ventured disguised into Medina and Mecca).
Old Black Joe
Cindy loves the fact that I, as a first-grader in a private school, performed (in a choral performance with other students) in black face. I was quite blond as a small child and had to have hair-darkening as well. [Cooper Renner. 22 April 2007.]

The beauty of the past
The beauty of the nineteenth century is that it’s done and dusted. It is the beauty of the past and the problem at the same time.

Update: Byron & Scott Duel
An engraving just in from a Greek source confirms the duel in which George Gordon, Lord Byron, has defeated and decapitated the beloved Sir Walter Scott and after which he has made a characteristically inflammatory remark, recorded on the image, but which we shall do well not to reproduce here.

Little Red Cloak

[Detail.] Illustration from Little Red Cloak by Harriet Burn McKeever. Ca. 1866.
IS not that a sweet little girl? Would you not like to know the dear child that looks so bright and happy? I am sure that you would like to know her name. It is Alice Murray. Alice Murray is the real name of the “little Red Cloak.” She is the second child of a widow, who has taken great pains to teach her little daughters. As soon as Alice began to talk, Mrs. Murray tried to teach her to deny herself, and to find her happiness in making everybody happy.
The story continues.
Do “The German”!

The German, or as it is and has been for years known in Europe–the Cotillion, has been for some time past the dancing amusement, par excellence, of American society.
Unlike most other dances, the German depends very largely for its success upon the tact and knowledge of its leader. Many who are competent by reason of their experience to enact the part of leader of the German are really disqualified by an absence of tact and good judgment which is fatal to that common spirit of enjoyment which alone makes the German or any other dance a fitting amusement for ladies and gentlemen.

Meet Vincent, my favourite hipster in Arles

Here in the hipster community in Arles, we’ve been really lucky to have the totally awesome M. Paul Gauguin staying in our intimate community for the past two months, on artist residency at the Yellow House artist collective. But Vincent Van Gogh is the dude who nagged at M. Gauguin to get his arse over here, so like, totally kudos to Vincent and we’d like to give him a shout out right now also because he’s had a pretty shitty time lately, having had his ear cut off this past week. M. Gauguin has uh, moved on now and we certainly hope he has had a good time in Arles and will remember the nightlife here fondly. We’re looking forward to seeing Arles in the paintings he made while he was here.
Oh yeah, so if you’re interested, you can also look at Vincent’s paintings out in the Yellow House. Nobody much likes the paintings, they’re kinda silly and wacky, but we like Vincent anyway, he’s cool. Very very weird, but that’s ok.
January 22, 1889, Arles.
Time was,

people knew their place.
The Story Behind Baphomet the Sabbatic Goat
In an effort to fill the void, behold Baphomet:
While I was in Dogon country looking at Indigo-dyed textiles, I felt something poking me in the ass. I looked back and met Baphomet. I petted him on the head and he playfully headbutted me back. This pissed off the jealous indigo textile woman, mid-bargain (she bargained hard), but I couldn’t help myself, so I stroked his horn. He recoiled back and launched forward, breaking his leash, ramming my ass and wreaking general havoc. Needless to say, we purchased the textile. And she wanted extra for the photo.
Lizst’s Daughter in Affair with Older Wagner Shocker
The illegitimate daughter of Lizst and his aristocratic mistress, the Countess Marie d’Agoult, has been exposed as the latest lover of Richard Wagner. The married composer and Cosima von Bülow, his 24-years-younger mistress, who is also married, have been discovered in flagrante in a plush romantic hideaway in Switzerland. “We intend to get married”, insisted Wagner, 24 years her senior, about his intentions for his ripe young mistress.
Cosima’s mother, the Countess Marie d’Agoult, has been writing novels since she split with Lizst, and her nom de plume, Daniel Stern, has become a household nom. She was unavailable to comment on the latest revelations about her daughter.
The lusty 53 year old composer and his 29 year old mistress have shacked up in a lovenest in Tribschen, a popular hideaway for the rich and musical, on the shore of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. This rendezvous for their nighly trysts is paid for, Clusterflock can exclusively reveal, by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It has been suggested that Cosima has also borne Wagner two lovechildren. Clearly the traditions and conventions of our contemporary society are not beyond the contempt of this artist-aristocrat class.
It is alleged that Lizst introduced his daughter to Wagner when she was a tender 16 years old. What his motives might have been for introducing his teenage daughter to a successful musical genius entering his middle years, are as yet unclear.
Cosima has been married to the virtuoso pianist Hans von Bülow since 1857. Her father, Franz Lizst, was also a virtuoso pianist. Whether Cosima has an Oedipus Complex will not be revealed until the next century.
Cosima’s diary has been disclosed to Clusterflock, and will be serialised in the coming weeks.
