The first thing we did was make fire, then porn.

They’ve found the oldest known piece of human made art. It was made 35,000 years ago, when Homo Sapiens (that’s us!) were “spreading throughout Europe”. Some will call it porn, some will call it sensible. Others will try to eat it (that’s you, Utah!). But here she is… The Venus of Hohle Fels. Who said archaeologists don’t have a sense of humour?

He added: “It is clear that the sexually symbolic dimension in European, and indeed worldwide, art has a long ancestry in the evolution of our species.”

    He has now been joined on the mantle by a plastic (not plaster) saint I found in a pile of dirt behind my house on Easter Sunday. Got kind of a Pagan vs. Christian thing going. They both seem pretty cool about it, though the Christian does have a meek and mild aspect to him that could be construed as sheepish. And he does not appear to have an erection.

    saw this by itself in its innocuous little display cabinet and it blew my mind. 10000 years ago, we’d moved on from phallus, breasts and the exagerated vulva – and were figuratively representing union, bonding, love, conception, loss, separation – just maybe copulation. awesome and humbling. and we (she and he) are guessing it was made by a woman ?
