I am looking for women’s vintage shoes from the 1940′s (platforms, ankle straps, wedges) that are in wearable condition. I wear a size seven. Call me at (607) 427-0591.

~

I have a big box of Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb books that I would like to trade for some that I don’t have. If anyone would like to trade call Debbie at 642-3270.

I am having an huge family debate about the pronunciation of the word Worcestershire, as in the sauce. Some of my family from the Adirondacks pronounce it worchester, like Rochester, and then add the shire, like from Lord of the Rings. The other half of my family from the Baltimore region pronounce it like “wuster” and “shear”. Neither makes much sense to me but what are you going to do? I await your enunciative opinions in hopes it can settle a mushrooming family feud.

~

I, for one, am diametrically opposed to So You Think You Can Dance coming to Owego. I think the tight costumes and all the gyrating make for anti-family entertainment. I much prefer The Family Guy or MTV Cribs for wholesome programming.

~

I’m confused because I was listening to Otis Redding in my car the other day and he started singing “Soul Man”. I thought Otis was dead already when Bill Murray and Chevy Chase wrote that song and turned it into a movie. Guess it doesn’t matter.

~

For the lady in Ridgewood complaining and griping about her leaves, do like the rest of us and put them in your wheel barrel and dump them over a bank. The other option is to hire some neighborhood kids who would come in like a world wind and clean up your yard for a reasonable price. You can’t always expect big government to do every thing for you. Try reading the constitution and the Bill of Rights while you are at it.

I think it’s time for the Village of Owego to weed the nice flowerbeds on Erie Street before they get out of control again.

I was wondering if there was anybody out there that could tell me who was buried in Grant’s Tomb. Was it Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth?

~

This is in regards to the comment about Time Warner Cable. They are so bad. They charge over $70 per month for just the regular channels. I’ve written them and called them to ask them why they took PLEX off, and I’ve never gotten a response. I can’t get any other stations or channels in this area without cable. I pay $70 a month and still have to put up with garbage.

~

I would like to address the local merchants in our area. With the economy as tight as it is, many consumers are tightening their belts and not spending as they have in the past. When they do decide to buy, the merchants should appreciate the consumer and treat them with respect and with a pleasant attitude, instead of feeling they are doing us a favor.

I’m calling about the large cat that has been seen in Apalachin. I would just like to say that I have seen it too, and it is not a fox. It’s definitely is a big cat, and I’ve been trying to see it again since I spotted it on Marshland Road in Apalachin.

~

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that patches were being put on top of patches on Rt. 434 between Owego and Marshland Road. If possible, this is making the surface even bumpier. Couldn’t the money used in doing this year after year be better spent on repaving it?

~

To the person who called saying that people shouldn’t waste their time getting an education on-line – that’s absolutely untrue as I’m currently just months away from finishing my Bachelor’s Degree on-line and getting a six figure job with this degree. On-line schools only take hard working people to finish them. This is very hard, but just because some people don’t finish it, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work. On-line courses are also a good option for those who work or have children. They can better their lives, and they can better their families.

I am looking for someone to pressure wash my vinyl siding. Please call 625-2882.

Do you remember the old saying – “it’s not over until the fat lady sings” – last Monday night, the fat lady sang at Lockheed Martin in Owego. When this is all said and done, the helicopter problem is going to cost over 1,000 jobs locally. Maybe that’s a good thing for the nation’s taxpayers, but it is a bad thing for those who will be affected. Secretary Gates, who is a Bush appointee, thinks that saving $10 billion dollars is the right thing to do. As a taxpayer I think that cancelling the program was the right thing to do since it has ballooned to more than double the original cost, and we don’t really need new helicopters. So the people who have to lose their jobs at Lockheed should be able to find something, maybe not in this area, but they will find work.

~

I’m calling to compare our modern day jet airplanes, mostly passenger planes, to the C-17’s of World War II. The C-17 would come back safe. Our modern day jets are made too clumsy and they can’t stand the G-forces. They are also small and are just not built to carry the amount of people that they put on them.

~

This comment is about the gas prices. You can drive from one town to the next and it will be a 20 or 25 cent difference. For example, in Newark Valley it is at $2.75, and Owego is $2.53 (as of this call). Why would anyone buy gas at a quarter more?

~

We lost a small black and white long-haired dog on Rt. 96 in Owego. If anyone sees her could they please call 687-5637.

I have a thought for the person who is commenting about the parks, specifically Marvin Park. The fact that parks are poorly maintained is not true. The fact that the parks are littered and that the bathrooms are dirty is true. But who does this? Is it some thief in the night? No, it’s done by the people who visit the park. The public, the taxpayer, the people like myself, should not be required to pay for this maintenance and repair. This is not something that should be paid for by me, but by the users of the park. They should charge people for admittance and maintain themselves. So stop your complaining and clean up your act.

I’m responding to the question about Green Burials. If one uses a computer, they can find information about Green Burials and Green Burial places. However, here is a short answer. Green Burials are natural or native burials. One may bury a loved one on one’s own property if you have enough acreage. You need to have a permit from your local town clerk. In essence, green burial grounds, which are a commercial operation, are done where the graves are dug in among the trees and woods, and the bodies are placed into the ground in a simple coffin made of paper or light wood; or even just a blanket. There are no markers or headstones or other paraphanial that is manmade. The area, a year after the burial, will look just like the forest did before.

All you people out there who noticed that the price of gas is going out of sight – do a little more than complain in the readers’ column, take some action! First of all, purchase less gas. Get rid of those gas gobbling vehicles. Another thing, get out your pen and paper and complain to your state officials, don’t bother with the locals.

Until the other day I thought that the people complaining about Manure Road were blowing things out of proportion. But the other day I did travel over that road and it is disgusting. There is manure all over the road, and it is caused by careless farmers overfillng their transport containers and spilling the manure. When it rains it is slippery, it constitues an accident hazard. Plus, manure, as most anyone can ascertain from reading about diseases through the internet, is a vector of disease. All of this salmonella and animal borne diseases are present in manure. So I think that we need to write to our elected officials about this health hazard. This has to stop. If a commercial highway truck was spilling their load all over the road there would be some rapid action.

~

They have been talking about people turning around in other driveways and how its illegal. I had a car park in my driveway about a week and a half ago, the motor was running. It was a black car and it was rusty. It had a paper in the window saying it was government issued. I didn’t know where they were, they weren’t in the car. I looked out the window to see if they were at the neighbors and they weren’t there. I couldn’t leave the house because there were children in the house. People just park in your driveway and leave their car.

~

I would like to thank the nice young man who pulled me out of the ditch in the town of Berkshire on Wednesday with his truck. He wouldn’t take any money for his good deed. Thank you again.

It seems hard to believe that our Mayor has added $30 to the Owego Village sewer bills. They have no justification for this increase. It is worse that the rubber stamped trustees approved it without comment.

~

~

Being one of the 315 terminated volunteer firemen of the Village of Owego, I would like to know how they managed their pick since I’m a life member. I spent over 30 years serving the department and I want to know why I was terminated. I would like to thank the chiefs and the mayor for returning phone calls I have made to them. That’s sarcasm.

~

I just read today’s pennysaver on June 7, and I notice that Mayor Arrington wants to move ahead with the riverwalk project even though we don’t have the funding for it. On the other hand he wants to get rid of up to 315 volunteer firemen where it doesn’t cost us anything. Something is very wrong with his reasoning. People need to wake up and fight him to keep our volunteer firemen on-board.

~

. . .

~

The mayor should take a ride and look at Fox Street and Temple Street. We need money for the whole village, not just for a riverwalk.

~

~

You want to hear something cool, as most people know our fire department was 100% volunteer. Well, the mayor from the Coolest Small Town in America has fired 315 of those volunteers. Apparently the Fire Chief, in his last days in office, talked the mayor into it, citing a village charter which was adopted 158 years ago. Now is that cool or what? By the way, the mayor, and some of the trustees who backed him up, come up for re-election next spring.

~

I am calling about the garage sales. I like them just as much as everyone else, but I have a pet peeve, and that is people who have a sale and then leave their signs up. Please take them down not only for my sake, but for everyone’s.

~

I was just wondering if anybody has any information on these red boxes that are sitting around for shoes and clothing. Who has the authorization for them and what is it all about?

~

. . .

~

This is in response to the person who wanted to know about the toddler’s shoes hanging on the wire. All it indicates is that they are just a small time dealer.

~

The street sweeper that is used in the spring is normally used to clean up the salt and the sand from the winter, and also the leaves in the fall. The person complaining that it is being used to pick up grass is wrong.

~

With concerns of glow in the dark basketballs, shoes hanging over the wire, and the music awards being on t.v. and not on the radio – has anyone thought about the nuclear threat in North Korea? Or even our growing debt to China? How about our unemployment? Owego is not the greatest small town in America, but it does possess the smallest minds in America.

~

~

I will be supporting my volunteer fire department at the Courthouse Square on Sunday at 3 p.m. ~ To the person who wanted to know how to get scale off your plants, go to Agway and get All Season Dormant Spray. It works pretty good.

~

The scaling back of members of the Owego Fire Department to meet village charter requirements and save taxpayer money does not in anyway affect the care and protection given to the village residents. The same active personnel of the squad, fire police and firefighters has not changed. The same 140 active members will still be there long after the lies about the department quit being spread.

~

As a long time member of the Owego fire department I am shocked by all the political lies put out by Company 3 and their leader.

~

I was appalled to see Company 3 members at our Little League park, forcing people to sign a petition about the lies they are spreading about our fire department. Shame on them. ~ Our power was out on Tuesday, and Penelec got it taken care of and got it back on. I wanted to thank all the Penelec workers who were out there working to restore power to the over 600 people that were out of electric.
