Malcolm Middleton – ‘Waxing Gibbous’

This is a really nice mini documentary about Malcolm Middleton, a musician I’ve been following for a few years now.

This is like a love letter to the Scottish brogue.

what’s more beautiful than watching a musician sing?

Question: Is a Scottish brogue more adorable to Americans than other Commonwealth accents because it’s harder to understand or because it’s less familiar? Or is there something just essentially adorable about it?

    Or is it just me?

    It’s not just you.

It is quite adorable. Next in line of adorableness is any Northwestern English accent and of course, an Irish one. I know there are many variables and dialects, but I cannot detect them with my American ear. Or should I say, “I cannae detect them”.

So basically any dude from anywhere in the UK can come over and charm us girls — is that it?

  7. Deron Bauman on June 2nd, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    that’s what I’ve been told.

  8. India on June 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Pretty much. Didn’t you see Love, Actually?

Cockney accents rub me the wrong way, much like I suspect a Texan drawl makes most women feel like their vaginas are retracting up inside them and closing up.

  10. Cindy Scroggins on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:04 pm

    Ahem.

  11. Sheila Ryan on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Amy, I do agree to an extent. Your Cockney does nothing for me — except when impersonated by the likes of Terry Stamp in The Limey.

And it still fails to charm — rather, amuse.

  12. Sheila Ryan on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm

It’s just that there are others of the myriad British Isle accents that please my ears more.

  13. Cindy Scroggins on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I love me a good Texas accent. And if legend is to be believed, I’m pretty sure no girl ever closed up upon hearing Daryl’s drawl.

I’m tempted to get really nasty, but I will not.

  14. Amy Mabli on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Cindy, I love a good Texas accent, too, but it’s my understanding that most women from other parts of the country do not.

Daryl’s drawl did not make me close up.

I’m tempted to get really nasty, but I will not.

    Exactly.

Amy, sorry to drift off subject here! It’s okay. I don’t have a cockney accent.

Do you have all of his Arab Strap stuff? Stunning. If you don’t, drop me a line – I’m a sucker for Arab Strap, not to be confused with me being a sucker for an Arab Strap.

  17. Sheila Ryan on June 2nd, 2009 at 4:18 pm

I can imitate an East-Central Texas beauty queen accent, but my Cockney is shaky, and worst of all is when I try to do a Peter Sellers-style generic ‘Indian’ accent. I sound like a very bad stage Irishman.

Had a friend once who dug Arab Strap. In both senses, I think.

  18. Amy Mabli on June 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Phil, about five years ago I started getting into Arab Strap and that’s how I was introduced to Malcolm Middleton. I don’t have their complete collection, but I do have all their studio albums, 2 of their live albums, and 2 of their EP’s. I regret that I never made it over to the UK to see them live before they split up. Today I told Deron that I have to see Malcolm Middleton in a live show before I die. I just have to.

Sheila, you’re my East-Central Texas beauty queen!

  20. Phil Bebbington on June 3rd, 2009 at 1:03 am

Amy, let me see what I have and if there is something that you haven’t I’ll happily send you the mp3s. I was lucky enough to see them once at a fairly intimate venue – they were fab.
