I mean, what are the roots of this, if that can even be known. Pokemon? Ash and his family of little characters in balls? My son, not much younger than this subject, fixated on these characters as a toddler, then Yu-gi-oh, etc.
And say you are Benefactor’s same-age girlfriend or even wife (gulp). And you find out about the “dolls,” I think she called it. Spin spin spin…
I would have thought that someone in this type of relationship (on this end of it anyway) would be more of a victim. It seems that, while she might be a little naïve, she’s very aware of what she’s getting out of the relationship (attention) and what she’s willing to put into it (maybe it’s more accurate to say what she’s not willing to put into it). She also seems to understand that she might love him but he probably doesn’t love her; she’s just a doll.
That’s why I wondered about Pokemon et al, Michael. Not that I studied it carefully, I was just happy my son was learning math from a card game. But I guess the benefactors, Ash etc., had these little figures who they loved and cared for and these figures had different characteristics, qualities and assignments. The figures, or dolls, were sent out on challenges or battle and the like. There was no one love object, but a family.
I may be looking for explanations in the wrong place. But I keep thinking of this when I see these videos.
I admit, while I’m not judging the benefactor nor the doll here, I genuinely cannot understand a desire to be either. And that, suddenly, my commentary on community seems inane and irrelevant.
Riveted! I have no idea what to say – I guess we live in suspicious times and I found my thoughts wandering in that area. Perhaps it was that past cop life. Not that I am condemning it – fascinating – I still wanted, still want more!
Interesting. Thanks for doing this work. My office is in a building next to the Sheraton I’m always amazed when the minions (and there are 1000s of them) take over every year. I never quite have time to go over and wander around, so thanks.
Fascinating. My mind is spinning so much I can’t even formulate the raft of questions I want to ask.
I don’t know that all questions will be answered, but there is more.
Glad to hear it!
glad you’re interested!

Like Cece, I have many more questions.
That is a different take on community. Yikes.

This is fascinating, Deron.
Eighteen!

It is very intriguing. I see it as sweet, too, in a way. I also see those women getting tired of that lifestyle in a year or two.
I love the exchange and I love the girl, but I’m thrown off because I keep thinking she’s actually Matt Damon in anime drag.

Give me more damn you, Deron.
there is more.
more is coming.
Pheew!
I’ll have a few drinks whilst I wait
On the technical side–I love it that the frame includes the fountain splurting up behind her.
that’s probably an error on my part. I haven’t gotten calm enough in these situations to take everything in.
But I’m serious–I don’t see it as an error but more as an added dimension. I say leave it in! I’m really enjoying all of these pieces, Deron.
thanks, man.

Steve, I don’t know you, but I want to thank you for writing “1000s” correctly. Any man who knows not to misplace an apostrophe is a friend of mine.
So, how do you feel about the 19th century?
‘Tis a fine century.
Okay, you can go now.
Too showy?
Steve, we think it has something to do with popsicle sticks.
